Abstract

Introduction

Dhammapala, the founder of the Mahabodhi Society and one of the initiators of the Buddhist revival movement in India, was born on the 17th September, 1864 in a Buddhist family of Srilanka (Ceylon). He became one of the most important figures in the modern history of Buddhism in India and Srilanka. By the time of his birth, the national religion and culture of Srilanka had fallen to the lowest pitch of degeneration. He got further grounding in the Buddha-Dhamma as a child when he was sent, at the age of eight, to a Sinhala private school where he learnt his lessons for two years from a Buddhist monk well conversant with the Sinhala tradition, culture and literature.
